Ipod restoring

havent used my ipod in quite awile so when I connected it to my computer I seleceted "restore ipod" (Restores to factory settings and erases all data) for a clean start. Its been "restoring" for awhile now, the same window is up on my screen "Restoring ipod do not disconect". Anyone know how long this is supposed to take? I put my ear to the ipod and couldnt hear the disk spinning or anything is this normal?
