I can understand that if that's all he's got / already has a laptop but if you have neither... which would you choose to buy to listen to music ?

A laptop is a brick and you have to actually pack/unpack it when getting on/off... an IPOD or similar you throw in your pocket.

I have the 5G 60GB iPod and love it. I use it mostly for listening to music and podcasts. I do use the video to watch some of the video podcasts that are available and have a few music videos on it as well.

I just spoke to my bro again and he says the most important is that he has the ability to hook it up in his car stereo (stock Civic radio)... I believe IPOD can do that with accessories right ? Does that go through the tape deck or something ? I don't believe there's an input otherwise.

He needs at minimum 30GB. Are there any other products out there that can do this and has 30GB+ ?

the 30 gb is a solid choice. In reality i dont think anyone has use for more than 30 gb of storage in between docking it at yoru computer and copying over new data.
don't care so much about an FM tuner... just want to be able to play his mp3s in his car. I don't think that's what that itrip is for right ?

that device lets you listen to your ipod through any stereo with an FM tuner which would satisfy his car requirement.

ahh misunderstood - I thought the only way possible was via wires... that works. Thanks.

itrip sucks (as does any other FM transmitter). If all he wants is to play it in his car.. any mp3 player would do for him.. and size probably doesn't matter I take it? you can save more w/ something else.

not just his car, but it's important that he's able to... he wants to plug it into his PC at work too.

He's heard those transmitters have audio problems/interference so he's looking at a device that may cost $150 (discounted from friend) that plugs directly into the back of his radio. link. Is it not obvious he likes music enough to go all out on this ? It's not the cost that's the biggest factor (I'm only paying up to a certain amount anyway)... I just want to find the best product for his purpose.

how does it suck. there are many varieties by different companies. i can't imagine they ALL suck!

Is there a quick way to rip a DVD to a video that can be sent to the iPod?

Similar to the pre DVD-R days when everyone was ripping to DiVX on two CD's.

FM transmission inherently will have interference. And you can broadcast only so much frequency range as well, so the sound quality is radio at best, which IMO is very "empty." It really is a subjective thing I suppose, but most of the time, FM is a last ditch resort I've found. Direct wired is best.

anyone know anything / experience the Creative Zen Sleek ? It's 20GB @ ~$250. Do they make good mp3 players ?

Zen Micro user here, Creative makes good MP3 players, atleast IMO, love my Zen.

If you have American Express card.. You can go to Americann Express and get the 20Gig with speakers for $150..
awesome... you rock. We'll try for it... can't beat that deal.

Ok for the $30 off coupon, you need to sign up for a new acct at Apple.com. The coupon may or may not come in the form of a greetings email. At which time, sign up another new acct. until you get the coupon.

video feature is *retarded*... small screen, short life.. its just a gimmick for the apple fanboys to boast

HOWEVER, i did purchase 1 (arriving tomorrow morning, as a matter of fact)... the new ones are tiny, the prices are comparatively good now, and line-out = cool... this is coming from huge creative zen fan and owner

You don't really need an iPod to connect your music device to a car stereo. If he has a tape deck, you can use a cassette adapter to connect almost any MP3 player with a headphone jack to your car stereo. Tape adapters tend to sound better than most FM transmitters, too.

the ipod is a good solution because it has line out.. if hes hard-wiring the player to the car, then he wants quality sound.. and line-level output will be cleaner than amp'ed headphone out... one of the reasons i went with ipod instead of another creative player
