how is the shuffle/random play?

i've noticed in my Dell DJ, even though i do shuffle, i hear some songs over and over (even though i have ~2,000 mp3's). does the iPod do a better job with random play? i thought i remember reading somewhere that anything computer related has a tough time doing "true" randomness.

well I've only had mine for about 3 weeks but it seems to work nicely. Better than my old Nomad Zen where it had the same problemn as your Dell DJ... well they use the same firmware, that's why.

It can still replay a song but it doesn't seem as frequent.

It works great, but the downside of shuffle play on iPod is that battery life goes downhill. I never heard a repeat until I ran out of songs.

You wouldn't think it would be that hard to build a good random song generator. Once it plays a song it just flags it as played and ignores it in the next call for a song.

Much unlike random dice rolling where you can't really do that. I've seen far too many poor implementations of random number rollers. For some reason some numbers just tend to show up far too often.

another question: will the iPod recognize that it's being charged while playing, and keep the LCD backlight on? i could have sworn i heard this somewhere. so, for instance, when you plug it into a charger while listening in the car, the backlight will stay on instead of shutting off after a few seconds.

well, it looks like the DJ has two shuffle modes, (shuffle and shuffle-repeat). i've been doing it on shuffle. i tried shuffle-repeat and it seems to play different songs.

I have an iPod mini, and I just hit play, plugged it in to the charger, and held down Menu to get the backlight. The backlight shut off according to its timer, but upon further inspection there is an option in the backlight settings for it to be always on.

Throwing a flag would make it non-random, though.
