So I gots my new nano a couple weeks ago and something is driving me NUTS.

How the hell do you charge it and listen to music at the same time with the USB cable?

If I just plug the cable in it says "Do not disconnect" and wont do anything else, if I "Safely Remove Hardware" then it comes back, but its not charging. So what the heck?

I SPECIFICALLY remember seeing it say "Charging" with a battery image when I first got it, but no clue how to get it to charge and let me listen at the same time.

You need a dock station that charges at the same time. Go to an Apple store.

no you dont. dock is only a cable extender, it doesnt add any functionality. just make sure you unmount the ipod from the computer (clicking the eject icon next to your ipod icon in the itunes source list is the easiest way to do it). if that doesnt do it, call applecare.

Hitting play doesnt work. I've tried that, and resetting it wont help either, because it will either come up as docked, and charge but not play, or come up as undocked, and play but not charge.

My old old 2nd generation iPod will let me charge and play if I use a car adapter, or the power adapter brick.

This is correct. I charge my iPod at the computer quite often, I just have to unmount it to allow it to charge and play things.

Of course, you can play songs from your iPod on the computer while its hooked up there, you may wanna give that a try.

So when you unmount it to let you playback music, does the "charging" icon in the upper right (or wherever on yours) go away? Mine does. So maybe it IS charging, but just isn't saying so? Seems pretty flaky if thats the case.

Any iPod will charge AND play if the power adapter is seperate from the computer connector (USB/Firewire).. my GF's 3rd gen is not charged thru USB so therefore it will charge seperately if the cable is not plugged in to the PC.

I have Ipod 15GB 3rd Gen.

I connect Ipod -> Computer via Firewire cable. It will charge and mount upon connecting. However, I CANNOT play any music because it says "DO NOT DISCONNECT" (flashing). If I want to play music, I have to disconnect/unmount, but then I lose charging.

I know if you buy a Docking station, you can charge/mount/play at the same time. Also, I think if you get one of those Firewire->Ipod->USB connectors, that would work too.

call applecare. ive had both a 1st gen and a new 4th gen, they all do that. so either something's wrong with your ipod, or they randomly made it so the nano cant do it. which makes no sense.

on the other hand, if it's mounted, you could just play it through itunes (both from your ipod and the original files in your library).

Sadly I can't play it through iTunes because I charge it most of the time at work, which is also when I use it the most, which is also not a good place to go around installing apps on.
