iPod not identified properly

I keep getting the following error message when I plug in my ipod nano (3G):

An iPod has been detected, but it could not be
identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect
the iPod, then try again.
If the problem persist, reinstall the iPod Support
software from Optional Installs on the Mac OS X
install disc.

I have to reinstall the iPod Support from Optional Installs (Leopard DVD) every time I reboot. Any ideas?

What version of iTunes are you running?

First, try another iPod cable.
If that doesn't work, see if it will work in another machine (start with the same OS as your system, and then try the other [so if you are on Windows, start with that, if you are on OS X start with that])
If that doesn't work, contact apple and see what they recommend.
If that doesn't work, go to an apple store and get it replaced.

I am using iTunes 8.0.1 (11). I tried another iPod, but it's the same result. I don't have another Mac OS system... it's a minor inconvenience, having to reinstall the Ipod Support but I guess I can live with it. If I exhaust all options I'll try Apple support. Thanks
