IPOD newbie

Just installed itunes on pc, and added ~400 songs, connected ipod & it has said "do not disconnect for the last 1/2 hour" is it adding the songs to the ipod?

Is there some sort of progress indicator?

It's my daughter's Christmas present, thought I'd preload it for her.

Just making sure - you using the computer she uses to load it? Ipods have a nasty habit of deleting the music on them when hooked up to a different PC. Past that I can't help you, I use ephpod.

No😱

It's itunes itself which does this, so if she's not a fan of the program you shouldn't have to worry. If she is, load it from her PC. Example is an acquaintance who knows nothing about PCs bought an ipod and brought it to me with his CDs, which I ripped & loaded using ephpod. Told him to get itunes, next thing I heard the ipod was devoid of music

ephpod downloaded, will use it on her notebook, and not sync with itunes after the intiial sync.

Just read the manual, it says sync is automatic, so it must be syncing the 400 songs.

Well, first of all, if I were you, go into your iTunes options and turn off the option that has iTunes "organize your library for you". That is a really, REALLY annoying feature. Not only does it move music files all around on your hard drive but it also erases songs when its hooked up into a different PC. Then, when the songs are done transferring, just go to the system tray and click "eject this device" or something equivilent and then unplug it from the PC.

With that option turned off, you will have to just find where all the music is located and drag and drop. Its that easy. Now, keep in mind that iPods organize stuff on the iPod by ID3 tags.

If you want some more help I could do remote assistance and just take care of it for you, let me know.

Sweet, thanks for the offer, figured out it was because I didn't reboot & a dialog box was under itunes, I removed the ipod, rebooted, clicked the dialog box & everything was a go.

Took me a few minutes to figure out the control interface on the ipod itself too, but once I figured it out, I can see why they're so popular.

Is there any way to get stuff off of the ipod? The literature says it's just a one way process...

btw to remove an iPod when it says "do not disconnect" just go to my conmputer, right click on "{Name's} Ipod" and click "eject" - after a few seconds your ipod screen will return to normal🙂

Yep, that's what I ended up doing.

i believe its drag and drop. you plug the iPod in, let it show up in iTunes, double click the iPod that is connected, and a window should pop up, then just drag and drop the files on to the desktop or whereever... i think thats it!

Is it really that simple? Maybe I need to update my iTunes... 😕

AFAIK the only way to get music off the ipod is by using 3rd party software; there are many -- have a look through:

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ipod-software-windows/

Here's a couple I've used:
- SharePod (freeware) - for simple track-by-track copying from ipod to hard drive
- CopyPod (shareware) - able to reconstruct your entire iTunes library; saved my butt that one time when I accidentally wiped out >90% of the music on my hard drive

umm, no. unless it is the first computer you intialized the iPod with. You could use software or do it the manual way by copying the songs directly from the iPod. After all, the iPod is nothing more then a USB mass storage device to the computer. First, i suggest you enable disk use in iTunes. It makes life esier and let's you use the what 20-30giga she probably has on that thing? Then after you have enabled hidden files, go to
X:\iPod_Control\Music\F00 where X is whatever letter ur comp has given the iPod. then you can just copy the songs to your harddrive. just know that the iPod gives the songs
wierd names, but they still have thier metadate. good luck.

Gosh ... I did not know that owning an ipod is that much trouble !
I was looking at buying an old ipod (3rd gen) thinking that it was just like my MP3 player that I can just drag and drop MP3 files in there ???
Based on what I read here ... ipod is pretty much tied to the first computer that you init it on and you have to use itune to put the music on ???
That's is too much crap that you have to deal with ... My MP3 right now even with small size but I am able to swap music by drag and drop MP3 files directly or just use the SD cards with pre-load libbrary or flash drive that I can do anytime ... look like the ipod cannnot do that ... I may have to reconsider it .... 🙁

Oh hells yes.
Do a search here in Peripherals and General Hardware.
You'll get all kinds of questions related to Ipod syncing.

I got one and returned it. I'd rather copy the files over directly. Its easier and I dont have to worry about losing them. Still using the old MSI MegaPlayer. Will get one of the newer Creative players eventually.
