iPod nano connection probs

As said in the intro, when I start installing the iPod software and it asks to connect the iPod, Windows correctly mounts it as drive, but the software says iPod connected (on top) but "waiting for iPod" (with the running bar) at the bottom. This goes on for two minutes and then it states "iPod needs to be formatted". The I hit format and the running "waiting for iPod"-bar again, this time forever (left it for hours...). 🙁

If I install the software without connecting the iPod - same story. iPod updater can't connect, iTunes does not find it.
Telling from my specs and all other USB devices disconnected, there should be far enough juice on the ports, what the iPod also confirms by the loading/loaded status icon...

Anyone ran into some similar probs?
