iPod mini battery and service plan

I am planning on buying an iPod mini. However, I have heard a lot of people say that the battery gets really weak after about a year and a half of use, and that it costs $99 to replace. Is this true? If so, would it be a good idea to purchase the iPod with a $50 3-year service plan?

Make sure you buy the second gen. My dad just got my sister one on sale and it was the first gen. First gen = 8 hours of battery life. Second gen = 18.
