Ipod + Laptop USB port (Charging question)

They're standard USB ports delivering the same amount of electricity other USB ports do, so yes. At least, I haven't seen any differences at all between my laptop and desktop USB ports.

It will drain from the laptop's battery, though.
 
Before USB 2.0 became the standard, some laptops had 'high power' USB ports. These were just USB 1.1 ports that met the power standards of USB 2.0. Now that we have USB 2.0 as a standard, all USB ports provide the same amount of power.

If only powered FireWire ports were standard, instead of this 4-pin crap Sony is pushing, and the unpowered 6-pin ports some other manufacturers use.

iLink I think is what they're calling it. Firewire needs a standard 🙁
