IT will have more storage

Better design + software

hmmm.. name an mp3 player that apple made that can compare to an empeg
which with 2 80gb 2.5" laptop hd's can hold 160gb of mp3's.

I have seen apple put out the ipod.. what else..

What does this have to do with anything? You are comparing a linux-based car stereo with a portable mp3 player.

I ask again, why do you hate the iPod so much?

So you don't like the iPod because Apple makes it?

Don't you think that is a little short-sighted? Any particular reasons that you don't like Apple or it's products?

To shush all the "ipod haters" - APPLE doesn't "make" the ipod.. They market the hardware made by another company (I forgot their name).. But, regardless, it's a great product.. You should try it out before bashing it.. Nothing has beat it yet but someone probably will some day, but at least lets give it credit for being a truly innovative product (ditto to the overlooked Archos Jukebox)

I hardly see where it beats the ipod unless I get some reviews in hand and a spec sheet. What good are two 80gb HDs on an mp3 player? Are they raided? It also means twice as many moving parts that will fail while moving around. Buffer size? Interface? Looks like they took an ipod and made it LESS intuitive. Software? Considering just mounting a seperate drive ala usb key would probably be best, that judgement call seems faulty. I think you need to sit down and re-evaluate what you're shoveling out there before you make broad statements that AT is resistant to adopting change. Heck, did you see how fast people went from nvidia to ATI round here? Resistant isn't the word to describe how easily people change their minds here.

$300 for 1.5 GB? No thanks, I'll take a 10GB iPod anyday.
I just like the fact that you can use the iPod as a portable hard drive.

I have a question though, is the ipod bus powered?

I'm a perspective ipod buyer, and this product doesn't really look attractive enough for me to change my mind.

Just wondering, I'm torn between getting an old 20 GB ipod of a new 15GB ipod. Saying the price is the same, what would you guys suggest?

Rumor has it that the new, stylish, freaking sexy iPod has a small bug - some of them have a light popping noise between tracks.. So either hold out until they issue a firmware patch or pick up the old one .. The new one just looks a bit better (and has USB 2.0 support) - otherwise they're basically the same...

Do you have 20GB of mp3s? Will you ever?

I like the design of the older ones better. Just my opinion. The new dock though, is a very nice feature.

I'd say get the most storage that you can afford.. The old ipod has EXACTLY the same feature set as the new one - a new firmware update gave my 10 gb ipod (2nd not 3rd gen) AAC and audible support.. The other added features are really not worth it in my opinion - the cradle is very slick and cool but I honestly prefer firewire anyways- one little cable to recharge the unit and xfer data.. The dock also lets you hook up the ipod to your stereo but a simple Y cable will let you do that as well.. The extra buttons are nice - if they're electrostatic then that means even less moving parts - that's cool but not really necessary.. Also, while the remote is nice, I hardly use mine (and the 3rd gen remote is exactly the same as the 2nd gens).. Depends on what kinda user you are - do you carry your walkman in your bag and use the remote or just hold your walkman? The ipods remote doesn't have an LCD so I find it barely useful.. Hmm.. What else... I think the new ipod's a tiny bit lighter than the old one... That's really it..

I think I have close to 13GB. Classical / pop / rap / what-not. 🙂
and yeah I don't think I'll really need a dock anyways. 🙂

I use portable players when I write programs / cycle / commute to work. remote would be nice but if the unit fits in my pant pocket, it really doesn't matter. 🙂

looks like I'm getting the old 20G version then. 🙂

Well, the old 20g one comes with a remote- when I say old, let me clarify that..
Generation One- 5, 10 gig units.. No remote, thicker than the newest ipods
Generation Two - 5,10, 20 gig units.. The 10 and 20 gig units come with a remote and the 5 and 10 gb units are a bit lighter and thinner than first gen units.. The 20 gig is the same size (bigger hd)..
Generation three- new design.. 5,10, 20, 30 gig units.. Remote with 10,20, 30g units. Slimmer / lighter than the gen. two but not by much.. The biggest feature is the addition of a dock that allows USB 1.0/2.0 support. Rumor has it that there's a "popping sound" between tracks - should be fixed via firmware updates but why risk it?

My advice - Get a 2nd gen player..

Let me add that the irony of a thread that was started to flame the Ipod has changed into a thread that's assisting someone purchase an Ipod is not lost on me 🙂

poor necro tried to start a flame war, and failed 🙁

FYI I have an iPod and it rocks. Have my Koss KSC35's with my Supermini Headphone amp and I take it with me anywhere I go.

FYI FFMCobalt, my Sennheiser HD580's + Clou Red + meta42 (it hasn't come yet 🙁) headphone amp can rock those Klipsch's even with my iPod's headphone out. Don't tune your ears out from portables because they're not as popular in the audiophile world.

Yeap. I think I'm going to get the 20G ipod. Bye bye Ipod Killer. 🙂

I have over 20 myself. About 25gb's or so.

bah, i'll take my 20GB Zen over an overpriced iPod. iPods are nice, but way overpriced. I would have paid double if I decided to go w/ an iPod.

Doesn't this (the Pearl) support Ogg Vorbis? It's also got built in capabilities to funciton as a music server when you connect it to the network
