what function does it have, aside from automatically launching itunes upon connection, or "preload" itunes to help it open faster?

if those are its only function.. im cutting it... f*ck background processes no matter how small they are

those are the only functions im afraid. the ipodservice comes back when itunes is open though. i disable my startup programs via tuneup utilities 2006.

I close them because what gives them the right to use my system rescources without my permission :|

QFT! Nothing wrong with being a ram miser, why should have have some poorly programmed app be using it up when other applications could benefit instead...

so do I, but I close everything that isn't needed. gotta get the best performance possible when playing bf2. my mere 1gig sometimes just doesn't cut it.

to answer the OP, yes, I close them out, and haven't had any problems yet.

Seeing as to how installation of a program is basically giving it rights to use resources, maybe you should just refrain from installing it next time. 🙂

I changed the name of ipodservice.exe to something else. It keeps iTunesHelper from running at startup or when iTunes runs.

This isn't about poorly programmed software, it's about iTunes. Apple is always right, no matter what - didn't you get the memo? How could they be wrong with commercials depicting silhouetted people dancing? If they want background processes to run and their music player takes 75mb of ram, so be it. Other software thus doesn't run enough extraneous processes and uses too little ram.
