so i've had an ipod mini for a while that's been running fine on my machine. recently purchased a used 20gig version from a friend in order to help me on a trip i'm taking to india in a month.

when i hook the thing up to my machine, it does not recognize it. is there something i'm missing that i need to do?

Have you checked out ipodlounge.com? They have an extensive troubleshooting forum.

is it a 3rd gen or 4th gen 20 gig??? I know 3rd gens only can power on firewire..so you may have to use fw to sync too..

hmm... that's a good question. i'm not sure if it's 3rd or 4th gen.

i know i run my ipod mini through the USB and it syncs and powers. i will try connecting the firewire to see what that does

thanks!

using a PC and can't remember what is looks like now as it is at home. i know it was purchased a year ago so it's most likely a 3rd gen. when did 4th gens come out

assuming u have a firewire ipod, then u most likely have a 3g one. if ur computer hsa unpowered ports, u can "force" ur ipod into disk mode.
try resetting it, and when the apple icon appears, press the previous track and next track buttons simultansly and it will go into diskmode. this won't charge it, so make sure battery
is full and good luck!

it has the menu, fwd, backward, and play buttons on the wheel (not a moving wheel). means it's a 4th gen?

went to the original box and it came with a USB cord, so it should be USB compatible. is it getting confused because i already have itunes configured for an ipod mini? would be pretty stupid if you could only sync one device on a computer

Make sure you use iTunes Updater to format it for Windows use, it may be formatted for Mac use (if its a brand new 4G then it is formatted for Mac use)

The problem could be anything.

1. Needs a reformat

2. Needs a reset (hold foward/reverse buttons togther for 15 seconds I think)

3. Needs a new cable (FW or USB)

4. Has been damaged/faulty and needs replacement

5. I forget what else.

this is obnoxious now. everytime i plug it in the little windows indication claims that it does not recognize the USB device attached to the computer.

I've downloaded the new ipod updated (doesn't recognize it), tried the Menu-Select reset, tried a different USB port

and this is all on a computer where my mini hooks up fine and works flawlessly!!!!!! :( :( :(

try it in multiple usb ports as well as another computer... I've hooked up 4 different ipods to my computer before and sometimes you have to mess with them a few times before they work... it's odd but you'll get it.

It probably just needs to be restored or something to that effect...
