ipod -- i love you but you're not perfect

I've had a 10G PC iPod since they shipped. It's great overall, no argument here. But a couple of things are pissing me off:

1) The seek time sucks. I can be listening to an album and seek one or two songs ahead and it's ok. After I hit the end of the buffer it's really slow. Makes jamming ahead a half dozen tracks a pain. Esp with the remote where you have no visuals.
2) It crashes, often. I will just be walking down the street and it will studder then keep playing tracks with the interface frozen and the controls locked. Only a hard-reset (menu + play) will fix it.

The iPod rocks as far as looks, size, and simplicity goes. But it has a couple tech problems that irk me.

I don't like any computer hardware that tries to sell itself by looking cool. Looks have nothing to do with functionality, and therefore I could care less.

Welcome to the world of Apple.

The first problem seems endemic to any hard-drive based device. The RAM buffer allows the HDD to only spin when needed, rather than continuously. The lag you're experiencing is waiting for the drive to spin up, not actual seek times. You could have super-fast access to tracks, but your battery would only last for a fraction of the time.

I have had my PC iPod for about a month now and haven't experienced crashing. I have heard stories that it will crash when running, or any other jarring movement that does not allow the HDD to keep the buffer full.

I have the 20GB Windows Ipod and have experienced none of your problems. I run, workout, do yard work, commute, etc. with it and use it about 3 hours per day. Assuming you have tried to retore or format it , I would suggest that it is defective and you should return it.

OK - I am not about to buy an iMac or G4, but seeing the quality in the ipod, it's packaging and the Apple customer support, I can see why Apple has a strong following. Yes, they are overpriced, slower and a little "girly" looking, but there is something about their products that I find interesting, don't know what it is. I would think quality is not one of Apple's shortfalls.
