If it's under a year old, take it to an Apple store and have one of the tech's take a look at it...

ya apple's "warranty" has got to be the biggest pile of #$%^ i have ever heard of. Mine was under the year but PAST their free 90 day tech support. They told me i couldnt do anything in the store and had to ship it to them for $50!!!. I can ship a tv for that price. They are on crack. Then i would have to pay for the replacement battery which was failing in mine. I mentioned that i found a site online that sells the batteries for 1/5 the price and i can install it myself and save over $100. The rep from apple told me that would "void my warranty". I laughed at her and said i obviously dont have a warranty anyways DO I!!! and hung up. Fixed it myself you b!tches!

Sorry about my rant but nothing good to say about apple warranty and that rant was meant to be helpful. If you didnt purchase an extended warranty be prepared to pay out the a$$. For your situation i believe the little board may have gotten disconnected. Happens alot. Take a nail file, pry that b!tch open, and reseat the plugs. Really rather simple to do and can save you the headache of apple support.

MaverickBP, the first generation (and possibly second) had 90 day warranties. The third and fourth generation models have the 1 YEAR warranty... The AppleCare plan for the iPod is CHEAP too... So stop talking out your rectal cavity about something that probably doesn't apply to anyone else. At least, not someone with the 3rd or 4th generation models that can walk into an Apple Store.

actually it seems YOU dont know what your talking about. My ipod is the third generation and so are 3 of my ex-coworkers. They all had similar troubles with apple. 2 for batteriers and one for the lcd. They may have changed their policy recently but it has nothing to do with the generations. And the applecare plan may be cheap. But you shouldnt have to pay extra to extend a measely warranty that they lie to you and tell you its a year when it fact its not. So please refrain from talking out your rectal cavity ass because im not spouting out theories and things i read from an online site. Im talking about facts that happen in "real world"

Apple is a joke.

1) Be thankful you didn't actually pay for the piece of crap
2) Buy a good (ie. non-Apple) player
3) Buy a good pair of headphones with the money you saved in step 2
4) Buy some salve for your rear with the money as well; now that you no longer own an Apple player your poor bum can heal from the reaming it was getting. The salve will help this along.

Actually, you DO get a full year of warranty on the hardware. You can read the warranty info here... Notice "One-Year Limited Warranty"...

Getting Apple Care extends the warranty out another year, and increases the level of it. When I purchased my third and fouth generation iPods, the one year warranty was spelled out to me... Since there's four Apple store's within an hour drive of where I live, bringing it in for repair is NOT a problem.

For the rest of the people that hate Apple... ah heck off. The iPods are not 'crap', they are excellent products that perform as advertised and don't mislead you with low bit rate song counts. I've seen other players listed as having more song capacity, but the bit rate is set to 64 or LOWER in order to get those numbers. Anything under 128kbps is useless when it comes to mp3's and such. Plus, you can do more with your iPod. I know of people that easily use their iPod as external (FireWire) hard drives.

Oh an Gurck, I think the reason you need the salve for your rear is from having your head stuck up it for so long.

like you said..."limited warranty". Except phrase they used on me. Of course they'll spell out the warranty to you. They won't tell you about the doted line unless you ask, "What are those dots for?" I love my ipod. Wouldnt replace it for anything. Just their warranty is ridiculous. But that point is between you and I and im not gonna hijack this guys thread with a my nutz are bigger then yours contest. His is a couple years old so the warranty part is out of the equation.

Do as i said forcesho, rip that bad boy open with a nail file and reseat the 2-3 plugs. Its very simple in there..there's only 2-3 parts. A battery, a board, and a rubber cover. Nothing you can damage. That may help your problem.

So you have to pay for customer service on a product you bought? What about people who don't live near a crapple store? Do they not deserve it for their choice of where to live?

Iaudio and Iriver players, among others, follow the universal mass storage standard and so can be used as hard drives as well, and unlike the ipod, you can put your music on them with a file manager of your choosing instead of having to choose between the buggy supported software or buggy unsupported 3rd party software packages

If you're going to comment on sound quality, don't you find it odd that the ipod has such a high thd rating on its headphone jack (0.42 vs 0.03 for the iriver) or attenuates bass to save on battery life, resulting in tinny-sounding music? Or that its EQ is crap?

Oh an Gurck, I think the reason you need the salve for your rear is from having your head stuck up it for so long.
Ah yes, the obligatory ad hom. When you have no argument, there's no better way to "pwn" someone than insulting them personally. Funny how people who like ipods also commonly know nothing about sound quality and insult people liberally over the internet... how old are you?

I bought a 2G ipod 2.5 years ago @ BestBuy w/ extended warranty. Exactly 13 months later, my ipod hd was dead. I can transfer songs into the player, but the player would just play songs one after another without actually playing them (it would just skip songs after songs). So, I took it back to BB and they replace it to the 3G Ipod for me. Another year and half gone by (just last month), my Ipod was dead again...the same problem. This time, I took it back to BB and complaint about the problem: to my surprise, they said that many Ipod have this problem and they aren't fixable. Any how, their new policy require their tech shop to fix it first before issue me a new replacement or store credit. So, now I got my credit and I went with the new Iriver H10. It is awesome. The moral of the story is: if you want to buy an Ipod, goto BB and buy it there w/ extended warranty...or you might stuck w/ bad Apple support.
