iPod/ Headphones questions

I've decided I want a iPod, I'll be able to use one at work and that'll help me pass the time. I tested out my sister's iPod Nano and I noticed how poor the sound quality was, is this the mp3, the iPod itself, or the default earbuds? If the sound is that bad by default I won't be buying one.
 
you can encode at whatever bitrate you like. the only limiting factor is hard drive space and the quality of your headphones.
 
I use my sennheiser's with my shuffle, the sound is much better, and they don't hurt my ears.
