I have a 2nd gen and just bought my sister-in-law a refurbed 3rd gen without a dock for $169 from the apple store.

What exactly does the dock do?

Dock simply makes it easier to connect to the computer without having to plug the cable in all the time. Its purpose is both aesthetic and to cater to human laziness.

In other words, it does very little.

You don't need it. I don't have one.

$169 is good price BTW. I have a refurb and have had no issues with it.

Thanks, cool. She'll be ecstatic.

I bought my second gen refurbed from them and have had no issues. I'm EXTREMELY impressed with apple's refurbs. I've bought a lot of refurbed crap and theirs is by far the most new seeming.

yes, but the line out only works when not connected to a computer... yay for apple.. blah. actualy, not sure if the latest firmware changed that back or not....

and yes, the dock is mainly for asthetics and to keep my ipod from sliding around on the table :p

nope, they haven't changed it around which is rather annoying.... the line out is the main reason I kept it.

i like the dock. just saves you 1/2 a second putting the ipod in the dock rather than finding the cable that fell on the floor behind the desk and then figuring out its orientation and plugging it in.

That's not worth $40 to me. :D I'd take it if it were free.
