Ipod Format Woes

I normally use Anapod explorer to transfer music to and from my ipod. I figured that I would give Itunes a shot after it had been some time and they might have made some good changes in the last recent update. I plug in and go, transfer a large collection until Itunes hangs up on a single song for 20 minutes. It locks up and so I ctl+alt+delete the program. I then try checking my ipod for the songs that just transfered ( obviously not all of them did due to the hangup ) Only three songs... Hmmm. So I try to hook it up to Itunes again and figure that I'm going to transfer over again, for real this time. Problem is the player says 18 gigs are used up already with no songs on the actual player. I restart the computer, reset the ipod, go through a checklist of things and still the problem exists. I figure, no biggie, I'll just format the player and then go through my Anapod instead.

The problem now is that the player will not format; it locks up under My Computer, locks up under the Ipod restore program, and won't work when connected in general. I tried it on another computer and the same thing happens to me. I tried to uninstall itunes and just go from the root setup that I was using before and still I have problems. How can I get this baby to format for me? Is there a maual way to format without hooking it up to a computer?!

Thanks,
-Ross.

I'm trying to restore it as a last resort and the software locks up when I try to restore it. I've tried this on another computer as well with no luck. I think it's time to take a trip to the applestore...
