iPod connectivity problems

I got a heck of a deal and bought a 4G 20gb iPod from a teacher at school for $10. He broke the lock switch and couldn't get it to work, so my brother and I took it apart and disengaged the lock so it would work. Now, the iPod turns on, plays music, turns off, charges, and everything. However, when I hook it up to my computer iTunes doesn't try to sync the songs. It still charges so I know the ports work.

I heard that when you first use an iPod it formats for either Macs or PC's, and I know the teacher was a big Mac fan, so if this is true how do you do this?

If there's anything else that I can try please help me out.

Thanks!

I don't have a solution to your problem, but, when I first got my 4G 20GB ipod (summer of 2004) I had a PC, but then I switched to a Macbook. But the ipod could connect/sync in iTunes on both computers with no problems.

Most likely you'll find better answers on apple's ipod forums. You'll have to fig through a bunch of morons though, once you do I'm sure someone will have had this issue and at least 1 possible way around it.
