Ipod connection issue

I got a 4g 40gig ipod and for some reason the damn thing no longer detects in windows

usually it detects and then I can run itunes or winamp or whatever to add songs -- cant do that anymore

however it still charges,
what the hell is wrong?

btw I have a dual firewire/usb type cable, tried both types of connection -- same result...

tried deleting the firewire controller in device manager and letting it reinstall -- nothing

any other ideas?

Reset the ipod?

Check the dock for dust/fur/etc... built up in the bottom or the connector, and check the iPod too. Past that, update iTunes, re-install iTunes, re-flash the iPod, all in that order. I've had this problem a bunch of times too, and most of the time it's just been the first issue. Damn cats
