iPod charging via usb?

So, I left my manual for my new iPod at work and have been having sync issues (connections dropping) and curropt file system issues again and again on my iPod. I had to format it and restore it over and over again.. Then I realized that I should probably let the thing charge before trying to sync to it. How long is enough? It's a new ipod with no external charger.

Have you tried running the ipod updater to return it to original state? I wasn't sure if that's what you meant by 'format'

Let it charge for a bit, the usb provides power, but probably not enough for those power hungry hard disk operations. I think it's stupid not to include an external charger, you gotta pay for it now where they used to give you one.

I just got a generic outlet-to-usb charger for $4. Not including all those accessories dropped the price of the ipod by quite a bit, and the savings are passed on to the consumer.

actually i can't see how it costs apple $30 to make a damn ac adapter. they'd make enough even if they sell it for $10.

Sorry, that's what I mean. The disk actually got corrupted when it dropped connection on an xfer so I had to quick format then run the iPod updater.

I think I have a lemon!

If it keeps dropping connection, then the problem is either:
1) your USB port
2) USB cable
3) ipod

2 & 3 means you have a lemon, and it's easy enough to test 1, just plug it into another PC or use a different port to check it out

Wish I had another pc to test it on. My last ditch effort is formatting it, old school the restoring the file system. If that still doesn't work I'll exchange it tomorrow. Do i have to find the box and all of that? I mean, I have it at work I just didn't open it as gently as I should have.. argh..

Checked - it's not. It seems to be a usb issue but I don't have another cable to test it.
Though I've bene formatiting the hd for about 20 minutes now without any dropped connections

Some USB ports dont give enough electricity (it says in the manual)

So what to do, what to do???

According to the manual - "Do not use the keyboard USB ports becuase they do not give enoguh power." I dont know if thast the problem that you have but thast what it says. You could get an external powersource.
Try holding the select (middle button) / menu (top bottom) together for 10 sec
Might put your iPod to sync

Are you plugging it directly into the computer or using a hub? Go directly to the source...

Sorry for going all spider on you guys.

The iPod was broken. I returned it and got a new one - synced perfectly on the first try.

Thanks for the input!
