Ipod cable question

I just got a new apple ipod and it comes with just a firewire cable. This works fine at home as I have firewire there, but I would like to use it on my laptop at work and it only has usb 2.0 connections. I know Mac sells a combo usb and firewire cable for $20 but can I buy a firewire to usb cable for less than $20 and would it work? Thanks.
