ipod battery life problems?

i'm considering to get an ipod (5 or 10 gb version) to replace my SlimX since it skips quite a bit w/ my cd-rw and that i dont like having to constantly make mixes. the only thing is that i've read that there have been problems w/ ppl who have had their ipods for over a yr and the battery is no longer capable of holding any charge. in addition, there is no way to replace the battery. is this true? are there any ways to fix this...i would hate having a 300 piece of hardware that will crap out within a yr or two

btw are there any other good alternatives to the ipod?

I have the 10gb iPod..the one w/the solid-date scroll wheel. I love it, personally. The size is pretty tiny, and the style is great...

There was just a recent firmware update that fixed some battery problems anyway. My battery is fine, I can't answer your question on the battery life, though. On a side note, I have the Mac version since I use it on both Macs and PCs...

The Creative Nomad Zen is a cheaper alternative to the iPod, but it's got the same battery issue, as it is not user replaceable. I'm not aware of any issues with the battery having a very short life, though.
