Update: Problem solved; the iPod fried the front USB ports. Rears work now that the fronts are disconnected. w00t!

Here's the scoop: just built a new computer for my inlaws (e6400/Intel mobo/2gb ram/320gb hdd/ATi 300 XL 16x PCI Express card/Sonata case/Windows XP Pro) and it was working fine. Everything was just peachy until they plugged in their 2g iPod Shuffle (the small silver one). All of a sudden the monitor went out and none of the USB devices worked. I just flew back home the other day, so we did some troubleshooting over the phone - removed all USB devices, booted to safe mode, deleted Apple Update software, deleted iTunes, deleted all the USB devices/hubs in the Device Manager under System Properties. Rebooted...it boots normal...then the screen goes blank after a minute. Normally if the computer is shutdown or there aren't any VGA/DVI cables connected, the monitor says that it isn't any signal, but we only get a blank black screen after the computer boots. We can see the BIOS screen, the Windows boot screen, and then the desktop for a brief moment...then it goes blank - just black. So, the iPod ate the computer.

Any ideas?

Any errors in the log files?

I'll check it next round - taking a 20 minute break to see if it solves itself :p Good thought tho, I always forget about that!

There were a number of errors in the log file, but none of them really got any hits when I googled. There were a few about the Service Control Manager and a few other error numbers, but nothing that pointed out exactly what the flaw was. I tested this computer inside and out - every USB port worked; we even used the ports with their USB memory sticks. It was flawless until the iPod was plugged in. Grrr...this is not the first time I've had a problem with a 2g iPod Shuffle (third to date, in fact).

Update, problem solved. The iPod Shuffle fried the front USB ports. Apparently it was a power overload or something. Apple Support said that many computers don't have enough juice for a Shuffle up front. So, if you want to run an iPod Shuffle on your PC:

1. Download the very latest version of iTunes
2. Do not connect directly to any front USB ports
3. Connect it to the rear USB ports or to a powered USB 2.0 hub
