iPod and small firewire port

why doesn't the iPod charge when I connect to my laptop using the small (4-port?) firewire cable? it charges using the 8-pin one, why not 4-pin? are the remaining 4 pins for power? just curious

thanks

There are three types of firwire port:

4 pin
6 pin
9 pin

there are no 8 pin versions.

the 4 pin has only data connections and does not carry power, the additional two pins in the 6 pin are +Vcc (12 volts, I think) and ground.

I don't recall what the 9 pin uses the other three for.

Because the 4-Pin IEEE 1394 cables do not carry power.

EDIT: IIRC the 6-Pin IEEE 1394 cables _look_ like they are 8-Pin because two of the "pins" are dummys.
