iPod AC Charger Needed?

I picked up an 8gb nano yesterday and the guy that rang it up recommended the AC adapter because it's "bad for the iPod to only charge with USB." Assuming it was BS to try and sell an adapter, I didn't buy one. There's no truth to this, is there?
