So it's been a long time coming, getting around to getting a soldering gun and the tools needed to replace the battery in my old but perfectly working ipod touch 3g. Finally did it since I hate leaving a device to die just because the battery is old. However now that I can play with it again I find that nothing, save older versions of youtube and pandora, will install on iOS 5.1. I'm wondering if someone's made a torrent app pack of many of the top apps for the Apple 3rd gen stuff.

I have one too. Use Tongbu. I don't have a link, it's Chinese but just like app store and you can pick app versions (if your Chinese reading skills are good).

That thing is ancient and very slow. I might suggest just using it as an iPod.

It is only ancient and slow if you are trying to run newer versions of iOS and /or apps. I believe the OP is just wanting old versions of some apps. My iPod Touch 2G is fast enough to run whatever apps I still have on there.

Correct, it ran the older stuff fast then, and it still does now.

Well, my iPhone 3G is just painfully slow, period. It runs iOS 4.

It would probably feel faster on iOS 3, but I can't downgrade, and that would make the app compatibility much worse too.
