So...when emails that have been received on the phone are deleted, they are retrieved again the next time that mail is opened. Can anyone offer a solution that would prevent the same emails from being retrieved from the server again and again?

Thanks for any suggestions.

What kind of email account is it? (POP, IMAP, GMail, Hotmail...)

They all do this? Maybe try restarting your phone. (hard reset by holding Home and Sleep until it restarts...)

Gmail should be set as IMAP, Hotmail should use Exchange ActiveSync, and your work probably uses Exchange also. Those 3 accounts are synced, so check if the mail gets deleted from their respective servers when you delete them on your phone.

The POP account just pulls a copy from the server. Deleting mail on your phone won't do anything to what is on the server. I don't remember if the phone would remember which ones were deleted, or if it would just redownload them. Maybe someone else can help, I don't have any POP accounts set up currently.

Do you happen to have your gmail setup to receive all the other emails as well? It may be grabbing one from each server, then again from gmail.

If not I'm not sure. I have multiple email account on my iphone and don't see what you're seeing.

I'm with gocorps. I have multiple email accounts and this doesn't happen to me either. I delete and it's gone from wherever it was.
