Ok I know I'm comparing a smartphone to a tablet but hear me out...

I want to have a very portable 4k video editing solution to make videos out of my smartphone camera and digital camera content. I will have a desktop at home for the real full blown workflows.

Ruled out a MacBook because for where I'd be on the go (train, bus, etc) a laptop isn't something I want to plop out. And when I'm home I hardly use a laptop because I'm mostly on my desktop.

But it would be nice to have a device powerful enough to handle 4k video ed ititing in a pinch.. I'd like to is it for media consumption, reading, PDF document viewing, writing, drawing..Scheduling,web surfing, Remote desktop, coding..

Surface pro 4 was appealing but let's face it the UI isn't ideal for tablets and the consumer reports rating turned me off.

Enter iPad pro 2nd gen 12.9" 512gb.. and ios11.. With a 10x processor and promotion and the 120 hertz display and the sheer size of the display giving me plenty of real estate to work with. I can even use it as a secondary display.

Sure, I can run final cut pro on a MacBook but the point for me is I won't likely lug a MacBook with me everywhere, whereas I may more likely have an iPad since it's lighter and easier to carry and use on the go.

And there are things I can and want to do that the form factor and ui of iPad are more appropriate.

Problem is now there is iPhone x.. even faster processor albeit lacking pro motion.. and it has 4k@60fps and dual optically stabilized cameras.. and it would mean carrying one device less.. as an all in one.. except I'd have no apple pencil support..

There is a good video editing app for it though.

Which would you go with? iPhone 6s 32gb + iPad 12.9 512gb vs iPhone x 256gb for the above?

PS I know the iPhone screen is much much smaller but possibly still workable.. And I know neither has a keyboard like MacBook but iPad has a keyboard case combo..iPhone doesn't so I wouldn't be able to code ..so there are trade-offs
Thanks

The thing is, its not about power, its about the physical aspects. Sure its possible to edit video on a touchscreen, but its not optimal in my experience. I know they've done wonders to make it better and feasible, but unless its pretty simple editing, you're going to quickly get tired of the experience.

The iPad Pro would be the winner hands down, for two simple reasons: larger display, and they've actually tailored it somewhat specifically for this type of use. The pencil probably would help as well. Another thing that might work well is if someone made some small little knobs like the big one Microsoft made for the Surface (where it functions like a button and dial, which would maybe make adjusting certain things easier; I think its neat and for video editing if you could have it work the timeline).

Unless you're really strapped for space, a modern laptop (or 2-in-1 which would offer you the ability to change on the fly) is svelte enough that its hardly much more cumbersome than a large tablet, let alone when adding a keyboard case. There's actually a lot of keyboards you could use with the iPhone, granted it'll look ridiculous you coding with a tiny phone stood up in front of you squinting at the display.

Just buy the iPad Pro and use it up to 14 days and if during that timeframe, you do not like it; return it in "new" shape back to the Apple Store and then go after the X if you want to go in that direction. But if you going use a smartphone; go with the 8+ since screen is it quite a bit bigger. The 8+ 5.5" is a wider aspect ratio then that of the X iPhone 5.8" skinny screen which is not as wide. When the two are in the stores; you will see that the 5.5" iPhone is much bigger screen wise then the X!

You're right. Had the chance to see the X in person several times at Best Buy/Target.. it doesn't really fully utilize the higher resolution and "all screen" to get more onto the screen than the 8 Plus or even older iPhones. It's about the same number of rows of text, sometimes even less. There's dead space due to iOS being written with previous devices in mind.. the size is pretty ideal for a smartphone, but I find the display still too small for my liking... while playing youtube videos in landscape mode, I found the size of the video still a bit too small for me... I think the X is like the iPhone 7 or 8.. I think odds are that Apple will release an X+ at some point..

I wound up going with iPad Pro 12.9" and MacBook 12", for fill different wants and use cases.. I want something portable and compact yet with enough under the hood to do what I need.. in both cases they fit the bill.. especially the iPad Pro.. I'm using the MacBook 12" w/ Final Cut Pro X and will do 4k video editing on it using proxy media files since it has a rather modest CPU inside. I also plan to use it for coding, some light VM's, for whenever I may need to do more multitasking than the iOS 11 will currently allow (limited to 3 or maybe 4 windows up at once on the same screen) and video/audio streams need to play one at a time and can't play in parallel..

Plan to use the iPad for media consumption, when lounging on the couch, light multitasking, short documents, scanning documents, drawing/writing by hand, lighter duty video and photo editing, using the iPhone 7 caliber camera as a backup of sorts for my main camera (don't intend to be that guy going everywhere taking pictures holding up an iPad but in a pinch it will do).

I'm still evaluating both to see which I get the most value and use out of, as I'd hate to have one end up sitting around collecting dust.. I should get an iPhone X instead in that case.
