iphone USB cable interchangable with old Ipod USB cables?

as the title states: are the old ipod cables interchangeable to be used with the new iphones? (first gen iphone)

Yes. Tyranicus connected his iPhone to my iPod charging cable in my car, and I used his iPhone cable for my iPod. They are all USB-30pin Dock Connector cables... they are all compatible.

Just be careful about firewire cables. I had always heard that the 1st gen nano dropped firewire support, but then i read recently that it was just the latest gen nano that dropped the support. I have no idea about iPhone's support for firewire

The firewire cable started a firestorm when the iphone 3G was released because it dropped firewire support which meant a lot of 3rd party hardware like dock radios and car chargers were rendered useless because they charged the ipod/iphone via the firewire lead. As far as I know, it doesn't harm the iphone 3g in any way. . . it just says warning: charging i s not supported with this cable.
