Unless you're an idiot, facebook doesn't violate privacy. Just don't post stuff on there that you find sensitive. I have my spam email, I don't care if people know what city I live in, and all of my status updates are things I wouldn't mind saying in front of bosses, friends, family, or out in public around a stranger.

Looks like you're the idiot for inferring something from my statement I didn't even imply. I didn't say that Facebook "violates" privacy. That's a whole different debate. I only said that the fact that people have Facebook pages is a perfect example in and of itself that people nowadays don't think too much of their privacy. Facebook gives them to platform to post private details of their lives and many, if not most, do so. Nowhere did I imply that there is anything wrong with Facebook.

This is news? They found the Kim family by tracking down their mobile phone. (If they had used it sooner, James may have survived, too.)

OH NOS THEY KNOW IF IVE GONE TO THE PORN STORE.

Unless you are doing something illegal (burying hookers isn't illegal), this is about a 0 on the "who the hell cares" scale. Tracking by cell phone isn't new.

Some say it may be used by apps for iAds.

wouldn't surprise me, this is actually the best way to do it without infringing privacy too much, since it's stored locally.
Look at google, chances are they know everything about your online life, from what you ordered for mothersday to your depraved porn habits.
there's a huge multibillion dollar market for private info - there has been for years - but be glad apple and google aren't one of the suppliers.

there's no real privacy in a world of computers... why are people still surprised?

Exactly. I have a junk email address on there, generic city/state (which I don't care if people know I live there since it's easily found out through many means), very few photos (and none of the drunken night stuff most college guys have), and am not searchable. It's not easy to find my profile.

I also only put stuff up there that I don't care if it's in public. There is not one thing personal on there that others don't know already. Oh, and I don't friend every fucking person on the planet.

Situations like this show why this country is going down the shitter. Statements like "Who cares if you're doing nothing wrong, why worry about someone secretly tracking you?"
You don't have to be doing something wrong to worry about someone tracking you.
It's called privacy. I don't care if it's because I'm boning a methed out, transgender crack whore in the doodoo hole with a lawn dart or if I'm at my kids soccer game. It's non of any companies/governments business.

A. It was not a secret, at least to anyone who stopped to think about it for 3 seconds. The new sis they they found where the information was stored.
B. It is your phone that has the tracking information, not "any company/government".

I refuse to get into slippery slope arguments.

So, you don't own a cell phone, don't use google, etc?

And it's copied to your computer when you sync with Itunes...think that file doesn't get back to Apple somehow? If it doesn't then what would be the purpose of it's creation to begin with? Since Apple is still not talking it makes people wonder why
