Hi,

This weekend I will (hopefully) be trading in my iphone and getting an android phone..... the problem is:

I cant decide!

I have narrowed it down to either:

HTC Desire or the Nexus S

I am leaning towards the HTC because of 'HTC Sence' which seems to be a good addon! But then the Nexus S runs Gingerbread..... but there doesnt seem to be MUCH difference?

They are both around the same price so that isnt an issue i cant seem to see which one is better and why?

I dont want to wait for the dual core phones because there will allways be something new around the corner and i will end up just waaaaaaaaiting..... So what do you guys think i should get?

Thanks

Karl

I'd get the Nexus S. Sense is the best OEM launcher/widget collection, but it is absolutely not worth it over the flagship phone.

I use LauncherPro on my Evo.

Maybe you mean Desire HD? That's a more fair matchup, though still delayed in the US.

Sense is nice, but getting the latest & greatest straight from Google is better. Not to mention better hardware (though some non-US Nexus Ses lack SuperAMOLED).

I would go for the Nexus S hands down, sense might look a little nicer in some areas but stock android always runs a lot smoother than any skinned version. I've owned like 8 different android phones and the first time I tried one with stock android I was pretty blown away at how much smoother it is.

I also just recently tried gingerbread on the mytouch4g I have and I like it a lot better than froyo, and it runs a LOT smoother than espresso sense did thanks to it being stock. Plus if you like using a custom launchers (almost everyone I know does) there is no reason to have a custom skin at all since you can't even use the widgets from sense with a custom launcher.

Thanks :)

Nexus S it is!

I did look at the Desire HD (and played with a friends one) but it is BIG! And the battery life is awful!

Thanks again for the help :)

you'll always be able to sell your nexus S for not too much of a loss if you want to trade up to a dual core phone in the near future.

The Nexus S is different though. The original Nexus held it's value very well and this one should as well. It's different than any other Android phone.

Totally different scenario.
When the Nexus 1 came out, it was the premier Android phone with not much competition.
Plus it sold so little that it was hard to find used Nexus 1.

The Nexus S is not much better than their Galaxy counterpart.
The Vibrant can be had for $225 right now and be hacked to death.
Noone in their right mind would pay a premium for a Galaxy S.
I buy and sell phones on a regular basis as a hobby.
Android phones do not hold their value.

Biggest thing the Nexus S has over the other Galaxy phones is that the GPS actually works (not sort of works, like others are able to do after rooting it). Other than that, it's pretty meh

I've got a Galaxy S phone and it's so-so, I suppose the Google support would give you an edge over Samsung.

Personally I'd wait a few months and get a dual core phone. If you can't wait that phone grab a HTC Thunderbolt.

Exactly. The N1 holds its value now well because its still a current generation phone. As much as you guys love to say the N1 is old or HTC rehashes 1ghz phones, or the Desire is old, it's still current generation. The Nexus S is a new phone but its based on old hardware. It's the same hardware in the current generation phone. You can argue the SGX540 is faster than the Adreno 200 or 205, but seriously, that's the only thing holding the Snapdragon back.

Furthermore, once the Desire came out, the N1 was meh. It may seem like the N1 is a gem simply because the Desire isn't sold in the US. The SGS phone is though. If you look worldwide, the N1 isn't that popular anyway. People just grab the Desire and mod the hell out of it.

The Nexus S and N1 and Desire and all of today's phones will be eclipsed soon with the dual core phones. He has just as much reason to get a Desire as a Nexus S. The only advantage I see the Nexus S having is fast software updates. Done. Nothing the modding community (especially for HTC phones) can't do.

I say wait. There's no reason to get a Nexus S and force yourself onto T-Mobile. If you want it that badly ok, but it'll also be out for AT&T soon. Even if it's not directly for AT&T, it'll be available in the 850/1900 flavor, meaning it WILL work on AT&T.

Nexus S is a great phone until you start web browsing, the scrolling can be very frustrating on the sites that has flash, which is about pretty much all the websites.
The MT4 is really good and with CM7 (gingerbread 2.3) is really the perfect phone i'm loving it so far. Very good battery life and all the functionality of the NS minus the NFC of course.
Some people will say the NS screen is better, that only applies if you don't read text a lot because the pentile screen is terrible when rendering text.
And one last word of advice, if you must get the NS is that look at the screen if its blueish or greenish at the lower brightness levels then return it and get another one if you find a bad screen because it becomes annoying, have your computer lcd to compare it.
I've actually had 3 nexus s pass through my hands and well the screen was great but on 1 anyways good luck with your purchase.

lol i went to anandtech on my overclocked Milestone (1.1ghz). So choppy and unusable. Good job flash.

That's why you only use it when you need it. Out somewhere and want to see the menu of a restaurant but it's in Flash? Load it up. Other than needing to turn it on to see Flash specific things that you may need from time to time there's no other reason to have it but it's good to have the option to turn it on if you want. Also with Flash you can download the Kongregate Arcade app from the Android marketplace and play tons of Flash games if that's your thing.

I leave Flashblock on even on my quad-core desktop rig. Who would leave Flash on with a phone all the time?

I seriously don't understand that. Then again all my Roms have adblocking built in and plugins are set for on-demand.

Heck I just set up our new laptop and the web always cracks me up when I see it for the few minutes before I get FF and Adblock installed.
