iPhone Tethering w/ OS 3.1.3

I am trying to figure out how to setup my iphone for tethering. I have OS3.1.3 installed and I followed this:
http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/chris-dannen/techwatch/simple-secret-iphone-tethering-fix

Trouble is, "Internet Tethering" still doesn't show up in my Settings->General->Network screen. Any ideas? I have found some more involved hacks that require my macbook, so I may need to try those later.

I'd like to be able to tether, but don't want to go the jailbreak route.

THanks.

Apple is a global company, its a carrier specific option. There's a carrier settings file on your phone, that will enable it, but you need a jailbroken iPhone and a custom carrier settings file to enable tethering. (AFAIK with 3.1)

Your options are either MyWi, which can be had over "RockApp" which allows you to use your iPhone as a Wifi hotspot using the 3G connection that anybody can connect to (this option costs $10 for the app), or use PDAnet using an ad-hoc wireless connection to your iPhone (this option is free through Cydia).

I don't know of any other ways -- I have looked for countless hours with 3.1.3. I JB'd with Spirit just the other day on my 3GS.

he didnt want to jailbreak the phone though. i use Pdanet on mine

pdanet - free and spirit is free.

what's the big deal with jailbreaking?

i mean unless you are one of those folks that actually bring your stuff to "geniuses" lol.

Hell I've taken my phone to them obviously jailbroken and they've handed me a brand new one anyways. YMMV My phone OS was completely unstable even after a fresh restore without a backup though, they restored it right in the store and had me walk around for 30 minutes, right on schedule it bricked again.

Anyways back on topic, if you Jailbreak with Spirit then you can enable native teathering by following the same steps as v3.1.2, but sense you don't want to JB then you are out of luck until ATT wants to charge you 30 bucks more a month for the "feature".

I wish ATTs damn stranglehold on the iPhone would end sooner, some competition here wouldn't hurt.

Tethering is the only reason I would jailbreak for.

How difficult is a jailbreak? What would I lose by doing it? How well does the mobile hot-spot app work?

Jailbreak is a piece of cake, you run an .exe and click a button. One minute later, your phone is jailbroken. It took me about 5 minutes to jailbreak and download MyWi, and it works well. The only problem I had with it was it drained my battery like nobody's business. Not to mention the strange decrease in battery life with the jailbreak to begin with.

The loss in battery life wasn't worth tethering, so I restored. Now, somehow I have the tethering option in network settings even after restoring.

I'm now trying to figure out how to bluetooth tether my iPad with iPhone.
