iPhone tethering question

My iPod Touch bit the bullet the other day, and instead of replacing it with a new touch I'm considering just selling my Bold 9700 and getting an iPhone. One question I have though is on my Bold i have it set up so I can tether without having to add the extra plan on. Is it possible to do that on the iPhone? I don't tether a ton, not where it would be worth the extra $15 a month, but I do do it on occasion. I know Blackberry has the Tether app, that does the same thing for a one time fee. I'd probably be willing to do that if I had to, but I'd prefer just setting it up like I have it on my Blackberry.

Hmmm, well that's kind of a bummer. Roughly how much memory does the Phone aspect take up? What're you left with when it's fresh?

That's kind of annoying, I'm surprised no one has found a way around that. I currently tether my 9700 without tethering enabled and just use the data from my 5gb plan (grandfathered in) and have had no issues. It'd be beautiful to be able to do the same thing. Like I said, I don't do it enough to justify enabling it and paying that large, bloated sum of money for something I am already paying for. Curse you ATT.

Is there a way to enable it for the iPhone 4 without paying for MyWi?

Yes. There are some patches available that patch the data communication driver, so that it will activate tethering without checking with your carrier.

I've done this, and it does work. However, it's a bit of a PITA to get it working.

First you have to install SSH onto the phone. The connecting to the phone via a command line console, install the patch. Then you have to copy the ini file off the phone, decompress it. Edit it, to enable tethering, and to redirect tethering data to your normal data plan billing point (instead of sending it to a seperate tethering billing point), then copy the edited file back.

There's an app in Cydia called iphonemodem that I used to tether between my iphone and a mac. Forgot how much it cost, but there's a trial version which you can use (which has an annoying popup that prompts you to upgrade every 1mb that you tether or so).

I prefer MyWi but my trial expired and I don't wanna pay for it.

mywi is nice -it's free if you look around. works great. it's a trick to extend the demo to 3000+ days which by then you'll own a iphone 50

1. Buy an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4
2. Put an iPad chip in it
3. Jailbreak it (really easy)
4. Purchase the MyWi app (worth the money)

If you put an iPad chip in it, you can get the data-only plan ($15 a month for 250 megs, or $25 a month for 2 gigs). Details here:

Had mine working all summer. You don't need a plan, it's just month-to-month. Unfortunately there's no unlimited, but 2 gigs is pretty good for basic stuff. Then just jailbreak it and purchase the MyWi app. It basically turns your iPhone into a wireless router by creating a hotspot from your wifi chip in the iPhone - you can connect laptops, desktops, portable game consoles, whatever works with wifi. Works really really well.

Umm, advocating piracy is against the AT ToS.

oh sorry. but doesn't the mywi violate the terms of usage of your iphone, thus being illegal by circumventing a pay-for-tethering monthly fee. so in theory that is theft.

i guess you need to stop talking about mywi/pdanet too since that is theft of services since AT&T specifically sells a tethering option.

two wrongs don't make a right?

How about the other way around? Can i put my iPhone 4 sim into the iPad?

yes and vice versa. they both interchange but you must change the settings APN from broadband to phone/vice versa. I am not sure if it is allowed but it does work. Check your TOS to see if it is allowed.

Yea, it's funny how this part of the forum seems to get a pass when talking about Hackintosh, jailbreaking, etc when that sort of stuff is taboo and results in a locked thread in every other section that I frequent.
