Meh, missed this post the first time around.
If anyone reads this going forward, if you can set the phone up for the person you are getting it for Android can be set up to slaughter the iPhone pretty badly under these exact circumstances(although it isn't that way out of the box).
Make sure to buy a phone with or pick up Vlingo, set him up to get calls through GoogleVoice and set up widgets for those at maximum size locked on every screen. Any incoming calls that he wouldn't be able to hear GVoice will send him a text transcript of the voicemail and he'll get it pushed to the widget on his home screen. Anything he needs to type he can say it and Vlingo will take care of transcribing it(so no keyboard worries). I'd reccomend using ADW, dropping the screens down to one, including SportsTap/SportsCenter widget and locking it down in the configuration menus.
All he needs to remember is how to turn the screen on and all the information he wants will be sitting there waiting for him.
Everything he needs taken care of without him having to mess around with a bunch of stuff, as long as he has someone that can set it up for him(if you are posting on this forum, I know you could very easily handle that task).
No, they are very, very different. With the iPhone the only place the shortcut is is on the desktop. You can organize them how you want, but if you have an app on the phone it is on the desktop. There is no way to leave it is as simple as Android for those who get overwhelmed by technology. Out of the box, it is a much more approachable interface, the problem with the iPhone is the out of the box experience is close to all you are going to get.
This post pretty much sums up why the iPhone was a better option.
