iPhone Question - What should I do?

I want to get an iphone so I can have my phone + mp3 player in one device (i'd get a blackberry but I stupidly legally bought iTunes DRM music rather then using Amazon so now I have to get an Apple device).

I am only going to be working in the US for one year and then going abroad (most likely) for 2-3 years, so I dont want to get a new iPhone 3g and have to get in a new contract, pay the ETF AND turn in my iphone to ATT in one year.

If I get a 1st gen iPhone off ebay and unlock/jail break it are there any good carriers that offer a reasonable price without a 2 year contract? Do they provide data? I cant seem to find ANY, but I know a lot of 1g iPhone users used diff companies. Do any of you have any suggestions?

Thanks! 🙂

If your not buying the phone directly from the carrier, you can usually sign up for service without signing a contract. At least AFAIK.

On the original it was VERY easy and very free, dunno about the 3g yet.

From what I've read 2.0 has already been hacked & unlocked. However, I'm not sure about the hardware. I can't imagine it'll take long.

I really hate how amazing the iPhone is but how your locked into ATT. I know every carrier is bad but ATT is the ultra-expensive, slower, wire-taping/spying worst of the worst IMHO 😛

But who am I to question the almighty benevolent knowledge of the Lord Steve Jobs, his iWill be done.

At&t isn't any more expensive than Verizon for me. TMobile is a bit cheaper, but not much.

All in all, I think all cell companies over charge for everything. It's ridiculous.

As for your question, just grab one, if you'd like... and then pay the early termination fee when you leave.

Once they figure out how to unlock the 3G iPhone, you shouldn't have a problem. I haven't tried it, but I've heard that if you are moving out of the country, most cell phone carriers will allow you to cancel without an ETF. Even if they wouldn't allow you to cancel without the ETF, the iPhone is a world phone, so once it is unlocked you could use it on any carrier -- you wouldn't have to turn it in when you cancelled. In addition, with the pro-rated ETF AT&T has, the ETF would go down 5$ every month that you have service, so a year down the road, your ETF will be $60 cheaper.

I find it amusing that so many people knock on AT&T, but Verizon cripples their phones like nobody's business, and no one seems to care.

Well I have Sprint, so thats why I can knock on ATT 😛

They treat me good and I got EVDO Rev A. Im paying like 60 a month for 4,000 min and data, free calls to all Sprint phones, etc. Thats why its hard for me to leave and go to ATT.

Plus when I go overseas I'm getting myself a Japanese or Korean phone with 1seg, et al. 😛
