I can understand changing the price around Christmas, but they dropped the top-end model by $200 a scant 2 months after they were released. That seems ridiculous to me...ouch, Apple.

Why? Obviously it was worth $600 a pop when you bought them. Is it somehow worth "less" now just because the retail price has dropped?

Consider the $400 a "Fanboy Tax"

I'm still pissed because the dell 19" LCD monitor I bought for 500 dollars has dropped by atleast 60 percent.

Haha 10/10 "Fanboy Tax", I love it

The point isn't the pricedrop, the point is the amount and the time. It was and still is worth $600 to me; I love my iPhone! But knocking 33% off within 2 months after the initial release is just ludicrous for new owners! So it's not an issue of worth, rather it's an issue of Apple taking care of their customers. I'm pretty happy with Apple now; they gave me a price difference refund even though I purchased my phone over a month ago. I haven't heard as good reports from many others though, so I guess we'll see what happens in coming days...

Yeah but how long did it take for that to happen? It would be like Dell releasing a new 35" LCD for $1500, then 2 months later dropping it to $1000.

Edit: Uh, come to think of it, Dell would probably do that lol.

In other words, your offended because someone who is poorer than you may actually buy an iPhone now and join the elitist arrogant club you belong too?

Really, why is it ludicrous for "new" owners? I guess there are two types of Apple customers. The first group being the elistist snobs, who tend to make little anti-MS comments at their parties where they all nod as if some great event passed between them, and those horrid wretches who only bought into the fad when it was apparent all the elistist got fleeced and nothing was left but to go after smart people?

:p

And you seem to fall into the category of people that are elitist snobs about not being elitist snobs. "look at me, I'm not a foolish Apple snob like those losers, look at how much better I am in terms of my logic and fiscal responsibility"

Did it ever occur to you that there is a third group? The group that has researched the situation, and come to the conclusion that Apple is the best choice in terms of price and features. Then those people really really start to love using the platform, and now want to get more things like it.

The early adopters of the iPhone, some of them just went out to buy it since they wanted it... it was shiny and new and Apple, they wanted to be better than others that couldn't afford it. Then there were those that looked at the situation, thought to themselves "Huh, you know that feature set is what I am looking for, and sure there are other phones that do the same thing, but I know that other Apple products seem to work really well just to do the same thing. This is worth $600 to me, and I figure this will work better than a <insert other phone here>." So those people are elitist snobs? Or are they the horrid wretches?

From the letter:

...a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store.

Hmm, anyone want to bet that the credit will not be redeemable on the iTunes store or for a gift card? I am guessing Apple is going to lock people in to buying products directly from Apple at what is probably the most expensive place to get them, Apple Stores or Apple Online.

Earlier I suggested Apple give an iTunes Giftcard but I am guessing the margins on that are much smaller so the card would actually cost Apple close to $100. However, on stuff bought from the Apple Stores or Apple Online, the margins are likely to be much higher, 30%-50% so the cost to Apple will be much smaller.

It will be interesting to see what, if any, restrictions, there are on this $100 credit. To be clear, this is just an observation. I think it is great they offered something but I didn't really care much either way.

I went to my local Apple store today and showed them my receipt from 11 days ago. They gave me the $200 back. I used some of that $200 to buy a new case and new headphones.

Also there was a huge line of people trying to get their $200 back. Some of them were leaving pretty pissed.

what exactly does that have anything to do with anything here?

If he got the iphone for 599 on launch day (or really last week even) then he now has a $100 store credit to apply toward the 160GB classic.
