A word of advice to anyone currently testing the first beta of OS 4.0.

Stick with it as long as you can. Beta 2 is a huge step backwards from a usability standpoint.

I understand that they are betas and that you really are only supposed to install them for development purposes, I just wanted to pass along some info for those that have chosen to take the plunge early.

Some problems I've noticed:

The camera app is almost useless.. when you take a picture it just freezes and never saves the pic.
You can send pics via MMS but saving them doesn't work either. The screen capture feature is broken also.

I've had trouble with the app store not recognizing that I have wi-fi turned on, and refusing to download large updates.

There are some nice additions such as sliding transitions between apps but that's just eye candy.

I'm eager to see what the next release looks like.

Do you mean folders? Those work pretty well until you sync with iTunes. The current version of iTunes doesn't support folders so they get deleted.

Just a quick update after installing Beta 3. So far it's a major improvement over beta 2.

First what they fixed:

Camera now works properly again (actually saves photos!!)

screen shot function works again.

App store now correctly identifies that you are connected to wifi and doesn't refuse to download updates

GPS/maps working much better

What's new:

Screen orientation lock (only locks to portrait, hope they change that)

iPod control widget in the "task bar"

new exchange icon for mail accounts

new faster way to close multiple apps in the task bar

I'm sure there is more to come as I continue to play around.

Beta 3 is very polished - feels like an official release where beta 1 (skipped 2 because of camera bugs) felt almost alpha - quirky and unstable - had to hard reset once a day.

Who wants to take bets on how long it takes for OS 4 to be jailbroken? Tethering is too good of an option to live without. I will wait for OS 4 to be jailbroken before upgrading.

pretty sure its already been done.

Looking pretty good os 4 seems to have alot of features coming, very uncharacteristic for apple. I guess they feel that robot creeping up lol

Can anyone comment on apples implementation vs the jailbreaks of certain features? IE multitasking, folders, etc.

Yea Geohot already had 4 JB. However he said it was the same bug used for 3.1.3 thats why he didnt want to release it.
