iPhone on Verizon Q3 2010

A new report citing sources in the Taiwan handset supply chain says Apple has contracted to produce a UMTS/CDMA hybrid iPhone due in the third quarter of next year that will enable the company to sell a single global handset to all carriers, and specifically to Verizon Wireless in the US.

Smaller screen? AWESOME, Verizon is the leading innovator at finding new ways to cripple a phone. With that said, if the phone's the same besides that I will RUN to buy it whatever the price is. I sold my iPhone because I couldn't handle AT&T or T-Mobiles service, I almost cried but it had to be done. iPhone on CDMA is perfect because I'm back on CDMA and these CDMA handsets blow fucking chucks compared to my iPhone. q3 '10 is a long wait though

Also, isn't Verizon deploying their LTE network throughout 2010? Seems kinda foolish to roll out a CDMA iPhone in Q3 if you're moving to LTE.

I'm sticking with my Droid though, in 2 years when its time to upgrade again, there will be MUCH better phones than both the Droid and iPhone.

You don't know that. I had zero reception issues with my 3G iPhone once Apple fixed the firmware. My speeds then averaged in the 900kbps range for the year I had it, and I was quite happy. So happy that I sold the 3G, and got the 3GS on the first day it came out.

What I didn't anticipate though was the rate of which the 3GS has been selling. At&t activated over 3 million iPhones last quarter alone. That number is huge, especially when you factor in the state of the economy!! 40% of that 3 mil, are new customers, and to top it off, their churn rate actually fell.

Yes, my data rate has also fallen, and I've experienced having 5 bars, but not being able to do anything a couple of times. Turning off 3G fixed it though. Edge is slow, but it's better than nothing.

My point is, there was nothing wrong with the at&t network before the iPhone 3GS, at least not my my neck of the woods. Whether Verizon can handle the iPhone remains to be seen. They really have no smartphones on their network. The Droid got a lot of early buzz, but first day sales were pretty weak. I don't count Blackberries, because of how they function.

Verizon had first dibs on the iPhone, and told Apple to take a hike. There had to be a reason.

I agree with you on the LTE thing. Unless this new CDMA phone will also work in LTE, then no thanks. And smaller screen??? WTF!!!

Yep, when I got my Droid I got a 1 year contract, which extends from my (current) contract's end date of May 2010, so May 2011 I'll be eligible for upgrade at a discount. I'm perfectly happy about that because around that time is when some nice LTE phones will probably be on the market, maybe some even having been around for a little while to get tested. Hopefully by May 2011 Verizon's LTE network has some nice coverage in Ohio.
I'll probably be setting up permanent shop in either Columbus or Cincinnati sometime toward the end of summer, and Columbus especially tends to get a lot of the network upgrades/enhancements first.

And even then, judging on what I've experienced thus far with the Droid, my only upgrade route will be Android phones only. I love the openness and customization. Plus, it does everything.

Though Windows Mobile 7 might prove tempting, if they can work get it to be a lot like, well, the exact opposite of previous Windows Mobiles... the biggest temptation is the integration of Zune services into WinMo7. That just sounds kickass. I imagine a phone like the HTC HD2, running WinMo7 with full Zune integration and being able to continue using my Zune Pass with the phone. That, would be awesome.

Suitable chipsets are at least 2 years off, maybe longer. You won't be using LTE in a cell phone any time soon.

I heard otherwise from our wireless guy at work, supposedly he already has a prototype LTE phone but cannot discuss it due to NDAs. He always gets the cool stuff . . . the things you get when you spend 4M with each carrier.

Regardless, it doesn't make sense for them to roll out and deploy LTE and not offer any handsets capable of using it at all for years after the deployment. I'd expect them to have a few handsets with LTE capabilities when LTE is actually available, with more coming available as LTE coverage expands.

I'd also expect Apple to offer some kind of 4G capable iPhone product if they want to maintain a competitive edge . . . unless Steve Jobs determines that Apple users don't need 4G, then iPhone customers will be fine with AT&T's 3G.

The first LTE deployments are going to be for laptop users. Laptops can bear the bigger, more power hungry chipsets that will first come. It will take another generation to get such chipsets in to a phone.
