iPhone on Apple Universal Dock --> TV

Has anyone used the Universal Dock to output videos to a TV? What's the quality like, or does that depend on the size/quality of the video file? I don't want to get the Apple component AV cables that plug into the 30-pin connector so I'm assuming I can just use the line out for audio and S-video for TV output.

PS. I'm using the iPhone 4 and have a 32" LCD TV (native rez 1366 x 768).

If you are adventurous you could take an old dock connector and splice it with RCA jacks to build your own.

The pinout is available online and building the cable should be straight forward and very cheap.

I can't find my Universal Dock, otherwise I would test this with you. I thought that you couldn't output video with teh dock.

The tables at the bottom should help you figure it out. It looks like the currently-selling "Apple Universal Dock" (if you don't own the "iPod Universal Dock" pictured in the OP) does not have S-Video out.

For composite TV out, I doubt the quality of the file matters. That is, I'm assuming you're probably transcoding to H.264 with Handbrake.

I don't think you can splice your own AV cable. The reason the pricey Apple AV cables exist for all recent i-Devices is it embeds some proprietary decryptor.
