Iphone lost apps and data after updating

After updating my iphone 3gs I lost some apps and their data. I can get the apps back but all work has been lost. Any way to recover them? Cloud is new in the update and can't find anything there, and it is not in itunes. I read a post about HD recovery but can't find that path. I use XP.

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\Mobile Sync

Change username to your username. Application data folder is hidden so you can't see it. You have to type it manually in the address bar. Mobile sync folder should have all of your backup stuff dno of it keeps app data.

Why can't you do a restore from iTunes?
