And they pretty much control the phone market outside of the US. Well along with Ericsson, and they to my knowledge only have a single WM phone. There are close to 150 Symbian phones currently on the market with about 40 new ones set to drop in 08. In American there's no arguing that Symbian phones have to be imported, but in EU and Asia my numbers as you said, might be guessing. But researching I suppose you're right and the numbers look to be much higher - maybe 40-50:1 for Symbian. Symbian has no plans to enter the US market, because they don't need to. They have an absolute lock on the majority of the world, and all the top phones to have like Nokia N92, Ericsson W950 & the FOMA phones all run on Symbian. I suspect even if Nokia breaks down and releases a single US WM device, they'll still continue to release Symbian only to the rest of the world.
That doesn't make one better than the other, that's still a preference thing. But it shows people who have a choice typically choose Symbian, as in EU/Asia you can find WM devices. For whatever reason in the US we don't have that option, unless the person chooses to go on Ebay and pay full price or more to import a GSM phone from Europe. I would choose a Q for $99 or free with a contract over a much better phone that costs $400 too. If Symbian devices start showing up in the US from Motorola it might just deal a blow to WM. The only reason Americans use WM is because it's whats available. They don't care because they don't know there are other choices out there. Go to any market where both are options and WM will always be considered the 2nd choice, period.
just my .02 cents.
Wiki quote 'Statistics published February 2007 showed that Symbian OS had a 67% share of the 'smart mobile device' market, with Microsoft having 13% through Windows CE and Windows Mobile and RIM having 10%'
Nokia releases Symbian phones because they own about half of Sybian (Sony Ericsson own 28%).
Its a shame you cant get Symbian phones in the US as it is a good OS and Sony Ericsson make fantastic phones. The X1 looks to be a stormer if it doesnt get pushed back any further.
Not all symbian phones are smartphones though and that will skew the numbers, phones like the w950 (a great media phone) is not a smartphone.

Your dislike of WM phones makes you say stupid things. People pick phones to do what they need. There is no one perfect phone or phone OS.
