So I just switched to an iPhone from android. One thing that’s annoying me is how the Health app accounts for activity. The app thinks biking is steps, stairs etc.

The Google fit app knows the difference. I don’t have to do anything extra. I currently just toss my old android in my bike bag and off I go, it knows what I did.

So I installed it on the iPhone and gave it access to the Health, but it really doesn’t work the same at all, it doesn’t know what I did on the iPhone, but it can pull the data in from my Google fit gmail account

a little annoying and I don’t wanna carry two phones around.

I live in a hill area, and it thinks I go like 20 stairs sections per day, on my bike, lol.

so, what do the peeps here use for biking? The rest of the of the nonsense I can ignore, but I like to keep track of bike rides

I use an Apple Watch. Yeah, that's an expensive solution, but it does a better job of tracking activity and is arguably the best smartwatch on the market. There are indoor and outdoor cycling workouts, and it'll automatically detect biking. It even detects if you fall off and can call for help.

If you just want to use your phone, I'd lean toward something like Wahoo Fitness, Strava or MapMyRide. Wahoo is relatively service-agnostic, while the others have good reputations for ride tracking.

Thanks, i was just looking thru apple watches and probably won’t buy one this year. But still good to know. I find it a little suspicious that the iPhone can’t accurately measure certain activities, but the watch can 🤔

Ah well, I log everything in a notepad anyways

Welcome. I don't think that's a plot on Apple's part — it's just that a device on your wrist with heart rate and motion sensors is going to be more accurate than something sitting on your bike or in your pocket!

Yea I hear ya. It’s just strange to me that my 4 year old one plus 5t running Google fit could tell the difference.

either way, I appreciate the feedback and will check out the apps you mentioned. I’ll keep my eyes open for some watch deals also, my employer offers some refurb deals from time to time, maybe a watch will be in the list!

That might well be an area where Google Fit has an edge.

Welcome for the help. The Apple Watch SE would be a good entry point if you have to buy new, but if you've gotta have an always-on display, a Series 7 (or Series 6 if you find a good refurb) would be worth it. I've had a Series 5 for almost three years and haven't regretted it one bit.

Bump, looks like IOS 16 is getting a apple fitness app, might be comparable to the Google fit app

Another AW user here. I use it for walks, hikes, bike rides and kayaking mostly. I also have it because I have Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) and like that the watch monitors my heart beat. I also wear it while sleeping to see if I have any apnea events during the night.

It is — I probably wouldn't lean on iPhone-only tracking too much (since it can't detect your motion or heart rate as well), but it beats absolutely having to buy an Apple Watch to use official fitness tracking features.

You should get a bike computer. It will have much better metrics, and the gps won't die on one ride like the AW can.
