As usual go to iTunes and click the link "check for updates".

I'm downloading and installing it now.

New Features
- decrease in call set-up failures andcall drops
- significantly improve battery life for most users
- dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
- improve email reliability, notable fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
- faster installation of 3rd party applications
- fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes if you have lots of 3rd party applications
- improved performance of text messaging
- faster loading and searching of contacts
- improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
- repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
- option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
- Genius playlist creation

Its installed and seems a lot of the bugs are fixed. SMS typing lag is gone. Safari no longer crashes for me when using quote here on AT. They changed the EDGE icon if that matters. Looks good so far apple!

BTW, Apple must be damn proud of this update, its RARE they ever say anything more than the generic 'Bug fixes, Stability Enhancements & Speed Improvements' on their updates.

Glad to hear its working well for ya, hoping its the same here.

I'm still having issues with 3G. When I turn it on the phone either goes to "No Service" or it would connect to the data network and I still can't make calls on it.
Do you guys think if I called AT&T and complain they'd do something about it?

Odd, i've never had that issue myself. When I turn it on, usually within 3-4 seconds it just switches right over and works.

How long does it stay like that for you?

Ok, wow. I now get a full 5 bars of 3G service EVERYWHERE in my house. The last update helped somewhat, but I still got better reception upstairs than downstairs. Now its 5 bars all the time. SWEET.

Other observations, browsing the web is MUCH faster for me, no more seemingly random and frequent slowdowns, especially when typing in addresses when viewing a large page.

HOLY BALLS! My update (backup & remove/install apps) just finished in 30 seconds. WOW. Doing the same thing 3 days ago took nearly 3 hours :) :)

I've had a really good experience with this update as well! The phone itself updated really quickly. Then I synced to see what happened with backup times. I had to take the phone out of the dock and put it back in because I thought it never started. Nope, I just blinked and missed it!

Everything else seems much more stable as well. Then again, it's only the first hour. We'll see what happens over the course of the day.

P.S. The 3G icon is different as well... :)

One other feature, it now shows how much room the Apps are taking up with a green indicator at the bottom of iTunes. Or was that an iTunes 8 feature?

Will unlocked 1st gen phones get relocked if I update through itunes straight up? I'm not jailbroken, just unlocked. So I guess what I'm asking is, is there a baseband update? Thanks. I've been looking forward to this ever since I updated to the craptastic 2.0 firmware.

Yep, I have to say, this brings back the user experience of the first gen iPhone. A big improvement from the buggy 2.0

This week sucked with my texting not working correctly. Thankfully, 2.1 took care of that. I can now go back and delete old messages!

Things here sound better here than over on the apple
forum. There are post there that say the 3G problem is
still there. They say that yes, the number of bars have increased,
but the actual signal is the same as before the update.

I can't see for myself until later.

Not yet. But there's still two and a half weeks left in September so I bet we'll see them before October.

I sure hope so anyways. IM without notifications is lame!

Weird. I thought the contact lag was gone (it seemed like it was) but now it's sorta back. Still maybe 40% faster, but still not instantaneous.

apple just reworked the calculation for the signal bars. Field test mode shows the same signal levels pre 2.1, even though the phone now shows 4-5 bars

This is my finding as well. Very shady if you ask me. I say we join that woman who's suing.
