Hello all.

Anyone with an Iphone, how is the downloads? From what I have read, Edge is 2.5 where 3G is 3.0. Will this make a huge change? I know the rumors about new iphone coming next month. However, if I only use the internet occasionally, mainly Google maps would it work ok? I have never used download internet on a cell phone so not sure. I just want something that is acceptable, i.e. can download Google map in a couple of minutes or less.

How is the triangulation? The guy at the store said it works great to find your location, then Google maps from their to help with your directions.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I haven't used EDGE extensively on the iPhone, but from what little experience I have. It will definitely do that. I wouldn't do a whole lot of actual internet research on EDGE. But it will load the pages fast enough for you to look at quite a few within a min, to two min, period.

Triangulation isn't an exact science. So it may work for you, and it may not. You'll have to see. It's great for looking for places around your area, but it's definitely no substitute for a real GPS.

the EDGE speed depends on the cellular coverage. I have great coverage at home and can download a wikipedia page (example) in 15-20 seconds. At work, with worse coverage, it takes 30seconds-1 minute. All in all, the speeds aren't terrible. 3G will download the data to the phone faster, however it will still take time to render the page in Safari's browser which means the processor is the bottleneck. I won't just assume the 3G phone is that much better.

Google maps on the iPhone works very very well. The triangulation is based on the TOWER location. At work if I use the location feature it puts me several miles away by the tower. At home it gets me right on the button. Location is usually a good approximation of where you are though, but I wouldn't try to use it while driving.

Edge is kinda slow, but it's not as slow as I thought it was going to be when I first got the iphone. Google maps download in about 30 seconds or so. A minute if my service is really bad at certain locations. Triangulation works good and usually locates where I am (give a block or two sometimes)

I can't wait for 3G iphone though. I think it's necessary for video and song download/streaming, but at this stage (pre-application store), I think edge does it's job.
