iphone AT&T billing question

I currently have the 1st gen iphone and was probably going to upgrade it to a newer one once they are released this summer. I would like to give the old phone to my wife to use but I have a question about the data plan charges.

Since the newer phone will be 3G I would have to pay the higher data price $30/m but would I still have to pay the $20/m for the older phone?

I guess what I am trying to say is for those that have 2 iphones do you pay the data plan times two? I think paying $30 + $20/m for 2 phones with data plans is a little steep especially on top of everything else.

If the above scenario is the case - would it be possible to turn off using data via the cell network and just access any data via wifi?

I've been with Cingular/AT&T for about 4 years now and have had the same family share plan. It's 550 minutes and is no longer offered. I see that there is a iPhone family plan but it has 700 minutes. I have like 2000 rollover minutes as is so getting another 150 minutes a month is a waste. I wonder if they can work something out.

You don't have to change your current family plan. They will just add the new data plan on top of what you pay now.

Yep, I spoke with someone from AT&T today and they said I can keep my 550 plan and just add the data plan.

I still think $50/m for unlimited data is pretty crazy. If I did go ahead and add another iphone my cell bill would be around $139.98/m BEFORE taxes. That would include unlimited data and unlimited text.

550 Plan = $59.99
3G data plan = $30
iPhone data plan (EDGE) = $20
Unlimited text = $29.99

blah

what a lot of people forget about is how much you spent for that 1st gen iphone. you paid more than 300 more then people pay for the 3g, so the higher data rates, mean the cost of ownership in the long term is higher, the day you walked out of at&t, you looked like the fool.

at&t subsidizes the cost of the phone now, and they do that by making you pay more per month. they hide behind 3g data prices blah blah, but you are paying the same data prices that blackberry's and windows mobile phones pay now. Yeah it sucks, and yeah it's high, but too many people complain about the cost of the data compared to the original iphone, and not compared to the rest of the at&t, and rest of the cell phone industry in general's pricing.
