I'm trying to help someone with a failed iOS 8 upgrade. They ended up doing a restore, but triggered the iCloud activation lock. They can't remember their account e-mail or password. Apparently they haven't downloaded any new apps or music on their phone since they got it over a year ago. Sounds like they made up an Apple ID just to get things going and never used it again.
The activation screen shows a****@icloud.com. The first letter is the first letter of their name, but they can't remember the rest of the e-mail address.
We tried the lookup at https://iforgot.apple.com/appleid, but it just finds a totally different Apple ID that they have. That account has no iCloud devices attached to it.
If we can figure out the e-mail address, we can probably get the password reset, but right now we have no idea what it is. The phone was bought overseas and they have no proof of purchase.
Any ideas on how to resurrect this expensive brick?
