Seems there is speculation that Apple might possibly need to recall the iPhone 6 Plus 128GB phone.

As the story explains, Apple used cheaper and slower TLC memory in the 128GB model to cut costs. But unfortunately this seems to be causing the phone to crash.

I suspect a recall won't happen, Apple will just fix with software. But with what Apple charges in storage bumps, I can't believe they are cheaping out like that using TLC while the other models have MLC.

Yeah, but isn't TLC still usable? Anandtech did some SSD articles talking about TLC and how much life you can get out of them, and considering phones last 1-2 years, shouldn't that be plenty?

I can't see how phones are failing already unless its bad software or people are copy TBs of data from their phones and deleting and redoing it or some absurd NAND wear test.

It's not that they are failing because the TLC has fewer wear cycles. Obviously it'll take a much longer time for that to happen. It sounds like the TLC just isn't performing as fast.

Samsung uses TLC storage, but I believe they compensate for the performance by using some SLC storage as a buffer. I doubt the iPhones are using an SLC buffer for the TLC.

I'm pretty happen I got the 64GB model, I definitely wouldn't want a 128GB model now knowing they are using slower performing NAND to save money.

It seems like a leap to blame the TLC memory itself. Its probably a controller firmware issue.

Me and the wife both have the 6+ 128gb. Love ours to death. Haven't noticed any issues mentioned.

I don't know what's sadder those that make up fake iPhone stories or those that defend the stories claiming they have first-hand experience.
