Been reading up on the latest iPhone rumors and more analysts are starting to believe that apple won't change the screen size from the 5 in this go around. If they do that I am absolutely jumping ship to android. Absolutely ridiculous that they refuse to ignore what the public wants.

Their market share is increasing, isn't it? I think they're pretty well in tune with what the public wants. What you seem to be missing is that different people want different things. Maybe a lot of people want big screens - but a lot of people don't, too.

It's difficult to find a fast 4" phone. I use Android in part because I want bigger than a 4" phone, but if I wanted a small phone the 5 would be pretty high up on my list.

Depends on who you ask.

I use Android for it's function, not because of massive screen sizes.
If the next Nexus increases to 5", I will be a little sad.

When have they ever redesigned the phone in the "s" version?

Also, about ignoring what the public wants... go ask people (iphone fanboys) on macrumors what the best screen size is. They all said 4s was the perfect size. Now the 5 came out and they say the 5 is the perfect size. They will take whatever apple gives them.

Not everyone wants a 5" phone. 4.3" is good enough for most people. Apple should make the iphone wider. Making it taller is a bit ridiculous.

I was going to say the same. I don't think the S will have any different dimensions. Like usual they will upgrade little hardware features and probably a couple OS features. Another fragment to the Iphone gear...

I would like to see Apple revamp the whole OS and do something new.

The only definitive factor for me when I bought my iphone 5 was the fact that it was the fastest phone I could buy with a small form factor. Had apple been running with Samsung, Htc, etc in terms of size, I definitely wouldn't of looked at them.

I don't want taller. I want wider. 5" is too big, but give me 4.3-4.5 and I'm a happy camper.

If apple refuses to budge on screen size I'm out for this go around. Buying htc one.

It's been known that the S versions don't get an exterior make over. The move to 4" was basically your screen size increase.

Expecting Apple to come out with a bigger screen is not realistic at this point. They put a good amount of money into advertising how perfectly you can reach the screen with one hand. It would look bad if they made a phone that contradicts their perfect setup.

This exactly. EDIT:To be fair, most, if not all, manufacturers contradict themselves at one point in time. I mean Apple did it when Jobs went on about how 3.5" is the perfect screen size and you'll never need anything bigger. It being Apple means they can put a positive spin on the release of a 4.5" iPhone.

The market is totally digging the 4.5"-5.5" phones, and Apple has a 4" one. I realize a lot of people love Apple for what they make which is an incredibly solid and well built device, but there is a growing amount of people that have switched from the 3.5" and 4" screen to an Android device because it has a because it has a bigger screen. Not to mention, Android has had larger screens since 2008.

Apple put themselves in this awkward position. Their philosophy is keep things simple and usable (essentially). Which they've done a wondrous job of for the past 6 years. The thing is that Android, software-wise, has developed insanely fast to be an insanely competitive platform. The devices are catching up, have caught up, or surpassed the iPhone (all generations) in terms of look, design, hardware, touch, taste, etc..

Apple sticks to the same paradigm of having only one device per year. Consumers have caught on to the fact that they can figure out a way to upgrade their device regardless of the new-every-2 thing most carriers have. They can try 20-30 different Android devices in the time it takes Apple to release a software update or a new device.

Many analysts have thought it best Apple produce another phone to cater to a different portion of the market. In a way, it makes perfect sense for Apple to do that. It'll definitely shake up the market a whole heck of a lot. I'm not saying the general consumer is an idiot or materialistic, but when it comes down to it, if they want a 4.5" screen or 5" or whatever, they're going to begrudgingly go to another device. If they had an iPhone to begin with and Apple has a 4.5" device, they're not going to even think about their next upgrade.

Anyway, that was a long enough post. Need to get back to work. :p

I find it amazing you guys will swap platforms (which is what actually determines you experience with a phone) on a whim but things like screen size are hard and fast rules for you.

If you switch ecosystems you'll have to completely relearn everything and possibly buy new apps, move a crapload of email and calendar events over and god knows what else.

The best apps are free, and your e-mail/calendar should be cloud-synced at this point.

Am I the only one that finds the iPhone 4/4S screens perfect? The iPhone 5 is too long. I want a more compact phone that fits into my pocket, not a monstrous one that doesn't seem to offer anything more than another row of something...

On that note, I disagree that the best apps are free. Some of the apps I use don't have any counterpart on Android, or the counterparts suck majorly (PDF readers for instance), to the point where I'm actually thinking of writing my own apps instead.

Apple is somewhat stuck with a fixed size. Their margins, procurement, OS, accessories are based on one phone. If they started offering a variety of sizes, would the price go up in general? Will the types of materials need to go down in quality? It's very easy for Samsung to produce a variety of sizes when they make the screens and can press out plastic components. Apple on the other hand orders one type of each component and doesn't have to pay for a flexible manufacturing environment.

Its an old habit. In the early 00's if a game didn't run in WINE it basically didn't exist to me even if I was using Windows at that time. I wasn't going to get dependent then have trouble switching to Linux on a moments notice.

The trick is to never get dependant on something exclusive to one platform.

The best apps are free,

HAHAHAHAHA...

OMG, that's hilarious.

hahahaha

haha
ha
heh

No.

And just to add an example, I still haven't found a VNC or RDP client as easy to use as iTeleport on iOS and that shit cost me $25 in 2008. The fact that you would say "the best apps are free" as an absolute rule is simply ridiculous.

And to the OP, if screen size is important to you, you should probably be planning the move to Android now. There's absolutely no guarantee that Apple is going to enter the size arms race.
