Redo the scan and make sure you move around your fingertip and turn it slightly sideways to get the edges too.

You know how it says to "readjust your grip" halfway through the initial scan? Yea, do that every time.

Also, it gets better as you use it.

I guess they didn't make the instructions clear enough because a lot of people are having a hard time with the training.

I was playing with it yesterday in the Apple store and it worked 100% of the time unless I specifically tried to screw up my scan. So obviously you didn't train the software correctly.

If you don't have contact on the outer ring, it's not going to work. That's what I notice when people say it isn't working.

I should have said I have the otter box defender case. Maybe it's the engle of my thumb.

Are you using just the plastic part of the case and not putting the silicone around it? Either way I think that case would obstruct the home button.

No, it's supposed to go sub-dermal. The case may be the culprit. Test it outside of the case, and be sure to make contact with the steel ring.

I heard something about cases like the bulky Otterbox cases obfuscating the fingerprint scanner. I use the Apple case, which doesn't protect it nearly as much, but I have no problems with it denying my finger. However, I have noticed that the reaction time varies quite a bit.
