I just picked up an Iphone 5 this afternoon. My wife got the Samsung Galaxy S3 and i must say its quite a nice phone. I bought the 5 because I just remembered my first gen ipod touch and how much I loved it, but right now I feel as if I would be further ahead had I gotten an S3 as well.

Its been years guys, help an apple noob pick up on how to use an Iphone, i came from a blackberry.

I've started a bit, i'm having a bit of trouble texting with the phone though. Is there any indication on whether the phone can be jailbroken soon? I did that with my Itouch and loved it.

In the works, but probably a few months away still.

Yea I'm still learning the intricacies of iOS. I miss the learning dictionary feature of Android (where you just tap and hold onto the word typed for it to be remembered into the dictionary and how the autocorrect gave you a list of words that you can choose instead of typing out the entire word (like iOS). I'm still trying to learn how to add words to the dictionary but some of the websites I read said to do keep typing the words into Safari until the word stuck into the dictionary.

For the dictionary, dismiss the autocorrect three times and it will remember.

What are you having trouble with regards to texting? What from the JB world are you missing that you're looking for?

I keep getting letters i don't intend for. I'll want s and get a or d or i'd like to use a j and get k and i its irritating, i tried to see if maybe the phone had a setting that pinpoints your typing style to minimize this but such a feature does not seem to exist.

Well, i don't know what jailbreaking an iphone/itouch means anymore... it was AMAZING back with my 1st gen itouch. Are you suggesting that JB isn't necessarily needed anymore? Theres alot of useful underground developments i'd like to be in touch with.

*I'm not ragging on the phone, i can't stop playing with it, i guess i'm expecting more, and its most likely there, but i'm too goofy to find it.

I'm just wondering if, from other honest unbiased users, i should stick to the iphone or return the phone and get a GS3, i have two weeks to return it.

When I first got a touch screen phone, I had to learn to let go. I had been so used to typing on a keyboard device, the G1000, the PPC-6600 and then the Treo 700wx that I had trained myself to always backspace and correct my typing. When I got my iPhone in 2008, it was real problem. It took a couple of years but what I do is just type it and don't worry about trying to read the text as I type and correct it before it moves on. I just type it, and let autocorrect do its thing. Then, I'll just make sure I reread it before I send anything. Moving from a physical keyboard to a onscreen keyboard takes some getting used to.

As for jailbreaking, I simply asked just to find out what you thought you were missing. For me, I jailbroke for only a couple of reasons. FaceTime over cellular, biteSMS, and mobile hotspot capability. Now, FaceTime and hotspot are included in my plan, and the iPhone 5 is fast enough that I'm not missing biteSMS's quick reply that much, so my need to jailbreak I severely diminished. But, I was never a fan of things like customizing the home screen layout, or widgets. That's why those things don't really draw me towards the Android platform, because I don't really care about them. So I was just wondering what from the JB scene you think you're missing.

Coming from a BB, you're not entrenched in a ecosystem yet. Take the two weeks with an iPhone and then take it back. Try the SGS3 for a couple of weeks. Serious hands on time will be the only way for you to determine which device and OS is best suited to your needs.

If you are thinking if jail breaking your phone you are better off on a android device.I hated the stock gs3 keyboard and within minutes I had a new one from the market, then a few days later I was on a custom ROM and never looked back.

Like I said,if you're thinking of jail breaking the iPhone already you will get bored of iOS real fast

Since your wife got the S3, one upside of you also having an S3 is being able to share stuff via NFC (tapping the backs of the phones together). Also any and all accessories/cables you guys buy could be used by both of you.

Oh, and on Android you can freely change keyboards without having to root/jailbreak. Only problem is that I don't think Swype works with the S3 yet (Swiftkey does though).

If there wasn't a jailbreak available I would have ditched my 4S by now for sure, so I would say it is still worthwhile. Unfortunately it will probably be some time before we see an untethered jailbreak available for either the iPhone 5 or iOS 6 so you have to decide if you want to wait. The being said, even with a jailbreak there really are not any great alternative keyboards available like there are for Android. I think the iPhone keyboard sucks about as bad as any I have used so I can understand where you are coming from. Small screen size and lack of third party alternatives pretty much mean you are stuck with what Apple deems to give you.

I have a 4S and my wife has the Galaxy 3. I like my 4S but every time I type on her phone I feel a little bit jealous.

What do you think would have made you "further ahead" with the S3? I mean... I bet I could use both phones just fine, but since I've been with the iPhone since the 3GS, it never really makes sense for me to switch.

Well, for starters, just being on the home screen feels really "exotic" with all the customization you can do. I also feel that the S3 is significantly easier to type on. The HD video capture is, in my opinion, superior to the iphone's and it also has expandable memory storage which doesn't lock me in to what the phone comes with. (I'd gladly take that back if Apple is able to upgrade memory in an iphone). I like nifty theme changes and what not, something that gives my phone my personality and considering JB won't be available for a few months its kind of just stuck in its semi-stock state.

I'm not an iphone or android user so i played my cards based on reviews and first-hand experience from friends and family. The iphone also came in black, which was a selling point to be honestly shallow...

The battery life is poor on my iphone compared to the S3, the data usage is insane (though, so is the galaxy's) I guess I got used to Blackberry's compressed data.

Ultimately, I love the phone, i just wonder if maybe the S3 is just all around better suited to what I want.

To adjust that on the Galaxy-

iPhone-

What carrier are you on? If it is AT&T or TMo why not swap SIMS and trade phones with your wife for a couple days and see which one you like better? If you are going to have a device for a couple years, best to make sure it is the right one for you IMO.

someone earlier gave the advice to return the iphone after 2 weeks and try a GS3 for 2 weeks. excellent advice, you will be much clearer after you do that.

I hadn't heard any perks for jailbreakers to go with android by the time of purchase.

Also, i'd love to just return and get a gs3 to try it but if I do that i'm stuck with the GS3, no trade backs.

I'm in Canada and am currently with Rogers Wireless. My wife said no deal on the few days of trading and a no deal on jailbreaking her phone.

The big loss if i went with the GS3 is simply the size of the thing, I don't like it, but its capabilities are terribly tempting.

Buyers remorse slowly setting in...

I think you've just gotten past the initial awe factor that the iDevices came with originally. Now all of those things that were so cool back then are normal, expected functionality today so you're underwhelmed that it does everything you think it should.

Get a Windows 8 phone brah

That'll definitely remove the feeling that his phone does all of the same stuff as the older iPhones and Android phones since Windows Phone still hasn't caught up to them yet...
